Characteristics of Lasius niger

  • Small ant: workers 3–5 mm; queen about 8–9 mm

  • Glossy black coloring, compact and agile body

  • Very active and exploratory species, ideal for observing behaviors

  • Cloistered foundation: the queen can breed without external food, but adapts well to assisted feeding

Recommended care

  • Ideal temperature: 20–28°C

  • Humidity: Medium (check the cotton in the tube every 1–2 weeks)

  • Feeding:

    • Protein: small insects, gammarus, tenebrios, etc.

    • Sugars: diluted honey, mead, nectars, nutritional gels

  • Recommended nest: move to a small nest (such as Terra Starter or Terra M ) when the colony exceeds 20 workers

  • Avoid vibrations and direct light: keep in a quiet place to promote development

Shipment

The colony is shipped in a sealed test tube, protected against shock and thermal fluctuations. It is not recommended to transfer the colony to the nest until the ants have stabilized after transport.
